Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney
Parliament Hill
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Dear Honourable Mark Carney,
Are you listening to the wisdom of our peacemakers and applying your efforts to using the philosophy of nonviolence and common sense to save us from the scourge of war and possible global suicide?
Our ancestors, the Russian Doukhobors, burnt their guns in June 1895 in a mass Peace Day, the first of its kind in human history, resulting in 7,500 migrants settling in Western Canada in 1899.

Since then, a rising tide of peacemakers have become active, including Mennonites, Society of Friends (Quakers), Project Ploughshares, World Beyond War, and the Centre for Global Nonkilling. For them, killing people, wars, and regime change are criminal.
In 1999 the Mir Centre for Peace was established at Selkirk College of British Columbia. How can your program of Canada’s militarism coincide with the Centre’s mandate of understanding and building cultures of peace through education? Military programs are replacing liberal arts.
While you spoke on May 28th at CANSEC, the largest military sales bazaar in Canada, the Selkirk College community protested militarization of education by Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy.
Let’s remember, Mr. Carney, nonkilling and love are the realistic stable paths to a hopeful humanity. As a leader of Canada, you have a responsibility to support life as a ‘human right’. As voting citizens of this country, we in the wider peace movement will watch closely how you fulfil this vital role.
Mr. Carney, stop supporting the military-industrial-parliament-academic complex by getting out of NATO and becoming a real statesman and peacemaker. You will win support around the world.
Mr. Carney, please commemorate our annual Doukhobor Peace Day in spirit with us on June 28 and 29.
In peace,
Koozma J. Tarasoff
